Yoga Studio Software NZ: What's Actually Worth Paying For

Running a yoga studio in New Zealand? Here's an honest look at what software you actually need — and what you're probably being upsold on.

15 January 2026

Yoga studios in NZ have a wide range of software tools marketed at them — from full-featured platforms like Mindbody to simple booking apps to purpose-built door access systems. The right choice depends heavily on how your studio actually operates.

Two types of yoga studios

Most yoga studios fall into one of two operating models, and the right software is very different for each.

Class-based studios

You run scheduled classes — Vinyasa at 7am, Yin at 6pm, etc. Members (or drop-in students) book specific sessions. You need class booking, waitlists, attendance tracking, and ideally online booking so members can self-serve. Teacher scheduling may also be important.

Open-access studios

Members pay a flat monthly fee and come to the studio whenever they like — no class booking required. This model is more common for meditation studios, heated rooms that members use solo, or smaller studios where the owner teaches regularly and manages attendance informally.

Software for class-based yoga studios

If you run scheduled classes, you genuinely need booking software. The main NZ-viable options:

  • Mindbody: powerful but expensive ($215–$666+ NZD/month at current rates). Worth it if you have 50+ regular students and run 15+ classes per week.
  • GymMaster: NZ-based, covers class booking and memberships, better value for most NZ studios.
  • TeamUp: UK-based, clean interface, simpler than Mindbody. Around $100–$150 USD/month. Good middle ground.
  • Acuity Scheduling / Calendly: Not purpose-built for yoga but cheap and functional for very simple timetables.

Software for open-access yoga studios

If members pay a flat monthly fee to access the studio without booking specific sessions, you don't need scheduling software at all. You need: recurring payment collection, door access control, and basic member management.

Latch handles all three for $200 NZD/month, hardware included. Members pay by card, get phone-based door access immediately, and lose it automatically if their subscription lapses. You see who's been in and when, from any device.

The combo approach

Some studios run scheduled classes AND offer open-access to members. A common setup: use a simple free tool (Eventbrite, Google Forms, even a WhatsApp group) for class sign-ups, and Latch for payment and door access. This avoids paying $400+/month for a system that handles both — when a $0 booking tool plus $200/month access system covers 90% of the need.

Open-access yoga studios — where members come and go freely — are a perfect fit for Latch. Payments and door access handled automatically, no class booking required.
