Latch vs Mindbody

Mindbody is built for studios with class schedules and booking flows. Latch is built for 24/7 gyms that want payments and door access without the complexity. Here's how they compare for NZ operators.

Two different products solving different problems

Mindbody is a comprehensive studio management platform: class timetables, instructor scheduling, client-facing booking apps, waitlists, marketing emails, retention analytics. It's designed for yoga studios, pilates, crossfit boxes — businesses where people book specific sessions.

Latch doesn't do any of that. It does one thing: members pay a monthly subscription, and while their subscription is active they can unlock your door from their phone. No bookings, no class schedules, no waitlists. If your gym is open floor access — come when you want, leave when you want — that's the use case Latch is built for.

The NZD problem with Mindbody

Mindbody pricing is in USD and fluctuates with the exchange rate. A plan that was NZD $200/month last year might be $220 next year with no change in plan. Support is not NZ-based, and timezone coverage for urgent issues can be frustrating.

Latch is NZD-only, built in NZ, and support responds within the NZ business day.

Mindbody doesn't control your door

Even if you use Mindbody for memberships, you'll need a separate access control system for the door. Kisi integrates with Mindbody via API, but requires hardware installation ($2,000–$5,000) and its own subscription. The result is two monthly fees, two systems to configure, and a risk that the two get out of sync — a cancelled member who still has door access.

The verdict

Which one is right for you?

Choose Latch if…

  • Your gym is open floor — no classes or bookings
  • You want 24/7 access without any staff on site
  • You want NZD pricing and NZ-based support
  • You want hardware included, not sourced separately
  • You want payments and door access as one system

Choose Mindbody if…

  • You run structured classes with instructor scheduling
  • Members need to book specific sessions or time slots
  • You need marketing automation and client retention tools
  • You have multiple instructors or staff to manage
  • USD pricing and global support are acceptable tradeoffs

Common questions

Does Mindbody include door access control?+
No. Mindbody is a booking and business management platform. Door access requires a separate system — Kisi, Salto, or a fob system — integrated via API or installed independently. You'll pay for both Mindbody and the access hardware.
Is Mindbody available in NZ?+
Mindbody operates internationally including NZ, but pricing is in USD, support is not NZ-based, and some features are US/Australia-centric. Several NZ studios have moved away from Mindbody citing cost and support timezone issues.
How much does Mindbody cost for a small studio?+
Mindbody's Starter plan is around USD $129/month but has feature limitations. Most serious studios end up on the Accelerate plan at USD $259/month or higher. At current exchange rates that's NZD $215–$430+/month, before any access control hardware.
Can members unlock the door through Mindbody?+
No — Mindbody doesn't control physical door access. You'd need a separate access system (Kisi, Salto, or similar) integrated with Mindbody to automate access based on membership status. That's additional cost and configuration complexity.
Who should choose Mindbody over Latch?+
Studios that need class timetables, instructor management, a client-facing booking app, waitlists, and marketing automation. Mindbody is a full studio management platform. Latch is for gyms that need payments and door access only — no classes, no bookings.
